SC declines JPC’s plan to meet CJI on One Nation One Election bills

The Supreme Court administration has declined a proposal from the joint parliamentary committee examining the One Nation One Election bills to hold an informal interaction with Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and other sitting judges.
The court’s secretary general informed the committee that the proposed constitutional amendments could eventually become subject to judicial review, so discussing them on the administrative side “may not be expedient or desirable”. The proposed October 6 interaction was accordingly cancelled.
The decision followed a discussion between CJI Kant and senior judges, after which the CJI directed that the interaction should not proceed.
Committee chairman and BJP MP P. P. Chaudhary told PTI the visit was put off as the dates of members did not match. Earlier, Rajya Sabha member Kapil Sibal had publicly objected to the proposed visit, calling it “unconstitutional” and contrary to the separation of powers.
The joint committee is scrutinising the Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill, 2024, and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which seek to create a framework for simultaneous Lok Sabha and state assembly elections.
