FIRs filed over CJP protest at Mumbai’s Shivaji Park

Mumbai police have registered FIRs against members of Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP) over a protest held at Shivaji Park on October 2.
The FIRs, filed at the Shivaji Park police station, name Abhijeet Dipke and Saurabh Das among eight named accused, along with 400 to 500 unidentified persons.
Police invoked sections 189 and 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with sections 37(1)(3) and 135 of the Maharashtra Police Act. The protest ran from 2 pm to 7 pm.
BJP leader Pravin Darekar described the protest as a “complete failure”, saying it drew little public support.
CJP is a Mumbai-based rights group known for its legal interventions on communal harmony issues. The group has not yet issued a detailed response to the charges.
October 2 is observed across India as Gandhi Jayanti, and several groups held peace programmes in the city through the day. The sections invoked relate to unlawful assembly and disobedience of public orders, and further investigation is under way.
