Deniers Push Commerce Dept to Seize Voting Machines

Election deniers Cleta Mitchell and Tina Peters are pushing a scheme to have Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick seize voting machines ahead of the midterms.
Peters, a former Colorado county clerk convicted on state charges over a voting-system breach, reportedly met with President Donald Trump in the Oval Office to discuss election security, according to former DOJ pardon attorney Ed Martin.
The scheme claims voting machines use foreign-made parts and pose a national security risk. The activists argue the commerce secretary already has authority to seize them. Legal experts say that view is far off base.
Records show the activists secured a meeting with Lutnick himself. A Commerce Department spokesperson said in May that Lutnick “never met or discussed election-integrity issues” with them.
With Election Day less than a month away, the push is part of a broader effort to get the Trump administration to interfere with the midterm vote.
American Oversight obtained records showing the activists enlisted the Commerce Department. The effort collapsed after a teardown of seized machines found no foreign tampering.
