Mamata Sidesteps Rahul PM-Face Question, Urges Opposition Unity

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday urged opposition parties to set aside differences and mount a united fight over the Election Commission’s voter-roll revision exercise.
Speaking at an INDIA bloc meeting of about 20 parties in Delhi, Banerjee said an “extraordinary situation required an extraordinary response.” The parties finalised a joint action plan that includes rallies and “save democracy” marches.
The bloc demanded the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Banerjee alleged vote theft and manipulation, saying Kumar must resign immediately. Kharge sought wider opposition unity on the issue.
When asked whether Congress leader Rahul Gandhi would be the opposition’s prime ministerial face for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, Banerjee avoided a direct answer.
The meeting also showed rare warmth between Banerjee and Congress leader Sonia Gandhi. “We will fight; we will win; we will protect democracy,” Banerjee said. The BJP’s Shivraj Singh Chouhan mocked the bloc, calling Gandhi’s push his “50th attempt” at a relaunch.
What happens next: the joint action plan’s rallies will test whether the bloc can stay united on the streets.
