The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Monday passed a resolution demanding the immediate restoration of full statehood, even as BJP members staged a walkout.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah moved the resolution, which calls on the Government of India to restore statehood on an ‘immediate and urgent’ basis. It also cites earlier House resolutions of June 2000 and November 2024.

The reference to the 2000 resolution, which had sought greater autonomy for the region, triggered the BJP protest. The party said it supports statehood but opposes linking the demand to autonomy and the pre-2019 constitutional position.

BJP members raised slogans, entered the well of the House and walked out before the vote. The resolution passed with the support of the National Conference, the PDP and the Congress. The House was then adjourned till Tuesday morning.

Abdullah said the Centre had promised a three-step process: delimitation, elections and then statehood. The first two steps are done, he argued. Why it matters: it is the first formal statehood demand from the elected legislature since the 2024 polls.
