INDIA bloc marches to ECI, seeks CEC Gyanesh Kumar resignation

INDIA bloc MPs marched from Parliament to the Election Commission headquarters in New Delhi on Tuesday. They demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged flaws in the voter list revision.
The MPs also want the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls cancelled. They carried tricolours and banners with slogans such as Save Democracy as they moved toward the poll panel office.
Congress MP Ranjeet Ranjan spelled out three core demands on behalf of the bloc. They are the resignation of the CEC, scrapping of the SIR exercise, and holding future elections with ballot papers instead of electronic voting machines.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge addressed the protesters and vowed the Opposition would not relent. Parties in the march included the Congress, Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress, National Conference and Left parties.
The march was stopped near the ECI office. Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and several other leaders were briefly detained after a sit-in, reports said. The BJP and the Election Commission have denied the charges. A nationwide protest has been called for October 10.
