Opposition parties in the INDIA bloc will meet in New Delhi on September 30 to coordinate their response to the controversy over the Election Commission’s voter-list revision and their demand for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s removal.

The meeting, expected at the Constitution Club of India, is likely to discuss a proposed parliamentary removal motion, signature collection, a demand for Kumar’s resignation and an independent inquiry into poll-panel decisions.

The row escalated after the Indian Express reported that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had recorded objections at least 14 times over 10 months on decisions tied to the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The Commission has dismissed the portrayal of internal dissent and says final decisions were unanimous.

On Friday, Congress workers protested in several states, including Assam, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. The Congress Working Committee meets on September 29, a day before the bloc’s talks. The opposition is also drafting a formal removal notice for Parliament.
