House GOP presses Senate to make daylight saving time permanent

House Republican leaders are pressuring the Senate to take up the Sunshine Protection Act, which would make daylight saving time permanent. The House passed the bill in July by a bipartisan vote of 308 to 117. Majority Leader Steve Scalise said there was no reason Americans should lose an hour of sunlight each day. He argued that more daylight means more time with family, more business activity and safer communities. President Donald Trump has strongly backed the change. On Truth Social last week, he called the twice-yearly clock change costly and bad for crime and stress. He has also clashed publicly with Senator Tom Cotton, a leading opponent. Senate Majority Leader John Thune told Politico there was “no clear path forward” for the bill. Cotton argues that permanent daylight saving would force millions of Americans to start winter mornings in darkness. America tried year-round daylight saving in the 1970s and reversed it within a year. Clocks fall back on November 1.
