J&K Assembly passes resolution demanding statehood
The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Monday passed a resolution demanding the restoration of statehood to the Union Territory.
The resolution, moved in the House, calls on the central government to fulfil its promise of returning full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.
Jammu and Kashmir was split into two Union Territories in August 2019 after the abrogation of Article 370, which had granted the former state special status.
The demand for statehood has been a central issue in the region’s politics, with parties across the spectrum backing restoration. Leaders argue that full statehood is essential for the region’s democratic functioning and development.
The resolution puts fresh pressure on New Delhi, where the government has said statehood would be restored at an “appropriate time”. Opposition leaders welcomed the move, saying it reflected the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, who voted in large numbers in last year’s assembly elections.
