Manchin: ‘If character means anything, you can’t vote Paxton’
Former senator Joe Manchin has delivered a blistering assessment of Texas Senate candidate Ken Paxton, saying voters cannot support him ‘if character means anything.’
‘If character means anything, you can’t vote for Ken Paxton, if character means anything, because he has none,’ Manchin told NewsNation’s ‘The Hill Sunday.’
Manchin, an independent from West Virginia, was asked about Democrat James Talarico but turned his fire on Paxton, the state’s Republican attorney general. He added he was ‘discouraged’ by some things Talarico had said.
Paxton was impeached by the Texas House on corruption charges three years ago but acquitted by the state Senate. Recent polls show Talarico narrowly ahead.
The Cook Political Report rates the race a toss-up. Manchin’s remarks reflect growing Republican anxiety that Paxton’s baggage could cost the party a safe seat.
