Six by-elections across four states vote today

By-elections to five assembly seats across West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, along with a Lok Sabha seat in Assam, are being held on Tuesday, news agency ANI reported.
In West Bengal, Nandigram and Rejinagar are voting under heavy security, with 71 CAPF companies deployed across the two seats. The Election Commission has mandated 100 per cent web-casting of all booths there. Counting for both seats is on October 9.
In Tamil Nadu, voting is underway in Dharapuram and Madurantakam — the first electoral contest in the state since the 2026 assembly elections. The bypolls were necessitated by vacancies that arose after those polls.
The campaign period for the West Bengal bypolls ended on October 4, two days before polling. In Nandigram, the Congress candidate has alleged intimidation even as officials report peaceful voting at most booths.
Results across the states will be watched as an early signal of the political mood after this year’s assembly elections.
