ECI rejects Opposition’s Parliament Annexe meeting request

The Election Commission of India on October 6 rejected the Opposition's demand for a meeting at the Parliament House Annexe. The poll panel called the proposed venue and manner of the request "unusual".
The ECI said no political party had sought an appointment until 4 pm on Tuesday. It was then informed by Delhi Police that a delegation of about 240 MPs, led by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, wished to meet the election commissioners and submit a memorandum.
The commission said it has a fixed protocol for meetings with political parties, laid down in 2025. It said the proposal to meet at the Annexe did not follow this protocol.
The ECI offered to send its most senior executive officer to receive the memorandum from the Opposition MPs. The offer was rejected, according to the commission.
The development came after INDIA bloc leaders marched towards the Election Commission's office in Delhi. Police detained several leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, before releasing them after about two hours.
The Opposition is protesting alleged discrepancies in electoral rolls and has demanded greater transparency from the poll body. The ECI has denied the allegations and said all procedures were followed.
