The Election Commission of India on September 26 ordered a review of its voter-roll software after an Indian Express report said two election commissioners had questioned Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over changes to voter lists that excluded millions of voters.

The Indian Express reported that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi raised questions to the CEC at least 14 times over 10 months, mostly over the voter-list updating process, known as the Special Intensive Revision, that began last year, according to Reuters.

The ECI said a committee led by a senior election official and including an independent technology expert would examine whether the software complied with electoral laws and rules. It also said local officials would visit voters flagged for discrepancies rather than requiring them to come to government offices.

The Commission has maintained that differences within the institution are normal and all its actions were lawful. Opposition parties and the youth-led Cockroach Janta Party have demanded the CEC’s resignation; the CJP said it would launch nationwide protests on October 2 if he did not quit by Saturday, Reuters reported.
