ECI rejects opposition’s plan to meet at Parliament Annexe

The INDIA opposition bloc staged an over-eight-hour sit-in in New Delhi on 6 October. The protest was led by Rahul Gandhi.
Around 240 MPs wanted to meet the Election Commission. They wished to submit a memorandum at the Parliament House Annexe.
The ECI said no political party had sought an appointment through an authorised representative till 4 pm. Its 2025 protocol requires meetings on ECI premises.
The Commission called the proposed venue and manner unusual. It said the demand could not be accepted.
The ECI offered to send its senior-most officer on duty to the venue to receive the memorandum. It called the offer an unprecedented step.
The MPs declined the offer.
Rahul Gandhi was later detained from the protest site. Reports said the protest demanded the election chief's resignation amid voter-roll revision disputes.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge later called a meeting of opposition MPs. The plan was to sign a letter seeking an audience with Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The standoff came amid growing opposition claims about voter-roll revisions in several states.
