EC Protests Escalate: Third Day of Detentions in Delhi

Protests demanding the resignation of Election Commission chief Gyanesh Kumar escalated on Sunday. Thousands of young protesters and opposition parties demonstrated in Delhi and Mumbai. Police detained demonstrators in the national capital for a third consecutive day.

In Mumbai, Raj Thackeray and Uddhav Thackeray led protests. They called for the electoral-roll revision to be scrapped and for Kumar to resign. In Delhi, protesters gathered in the early evening. Police detained some of them, according to a Reuters witness.

Police have not commented on the number or identities of those detained. Over the last two days, Delhi Police prevented protesters from assembling and took dozens away by bus. Many were later released. Cases were registered against some for violating orders banning mass gatherings.

The protesters say a nationwide voter-roll revision launched last year has removed millions of eligible voters. They allege the changes benefit Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP. The Election Commission and the BJP deny the allegations.

An opposition alliance plans a march to the Election Commission office on Tuesday. The Gen Z Cockroach Janta Party has announced a major rally in Delhi on October 10.
