Democrats’ Generic Ballot Lead Widens to 8 Points Before Midterms

An NPR/PBS News/Marist poll of 1,280 registered voters, taken Sept 14-15, found Democrats leading 53% to 41%. Independents favored Democrats 57% to 32%, and 45% of registered voters said their vote would be mainly against Trump versus 24% mainly for him.
A CNN/SSRS poll of 1,206 adults, taken Sept 16-17, had Democrats ahead by 8 points. It also showed Trump even more unpopular than in 2018, with only 27% approval on the economy.
But analysts caution the Senate map does not track the national environment. Republicans defend only 11 seats in 2026 versus 23 for Democrats, so Senate control remains genuinely contested even in a D+8 environment. Context: with the Nov 3 midterms about five weeks away, the trend line favors Democrats — but the battleground geography keeps the Senate up for grabs.
