Delhi Voter Roll Protests: Detentions Follow Two Days of Stir

Hundreds of protesters were detained in Delhi on October 2 and 3 during demonstrations against changes to voter rolls, with a youth-led movement and opposition groups demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The protests were led in part by the Gen Z-led Cockroach Janta Party. Demonstrators gathered near Jantar Mantar in the capital and in Mumbai, saying the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls risks removing eligible voters.
Delhi Police detained more than 700 people on Friday, bundling them into buses as they tried to reach the restricted area, Reuters reported. On Saturday, about 100 demonstrators removed security barricades before police detained some of them. Three FIRs were registered for violating prohibitory orders.
The movement has announced a new march on October 10 if its demands are not met. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday questioned the conduct of Delhi Police with women protesters and sought answers from Home Minister Amit Shah.
The Commission says the revision exercise only removes deceased, duplicate and ineligible voters. Critics argue the scale of the process could wrongly exclude eligible voters.
