Congress wins just 2 of 42 Silchar wards on ballot paper

The BJP-led NDA swept the first Silchar Municipal Corporation election in Assam, winning 34 of 42 wards. The Congress managed only two seats in a poll held entirely on ballot paper.
Polling took place on October 3 in 40 of the 42 wards. Two BJP candidates had already been elected unopposed. The BJP won 32 wards, its ally Asom Gana Parishad won two, and independents took six.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma used the result to attack the Opposition. He said the Congress loses even when voting happens on ballot papers, and loses by a wider margin on paper. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge had earlier demanded a return to ballot papers instead of electronic voting machines.
The BJP has sought a recount in wards 29 and 30. An independent won ward 29, while the Congress won ward 30.
Both Congress victories came by narrow margins. Sakshi Banik won ward 30 by 135 votes, while Rajashree Goala defeated the BJP candidate by 49 votes.
