Congress Wins Only 2 Seats In Silchar Civic Polls, BJP Takes 32

The BJP swept the first Silchar Municipal Corporation elections in Assam, winning 32 of 42 wards.
The Congress won only two seats. Its ally Asom Gana Parishad won two, and independents took six.
Polling was held on October 3 in 40 wards using ballot papers. Two BJP candidates were elected unopposed: Bijendra Prasad Singh in ward 9 and Bhakti Sen Talukdar in ward 20.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took a dig at the Congress. He said the party loses even more when voting happens on ballot papers.
The remark comes as Rahul Gandhi leads a ‘vote chori’ campaign against the BJP and the Election Commission.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has demanded that elections return to ballot papers instead of EVMs.
The Congress contested 38 wards but managed only two wins. Sakshi Banik won ward 30 by 135 votes. Rajashree Goala beat the BJP’s Debasmita Nath by 49 votes.
The BJP has sought recounting in wards 29 and 30. A decision is yet to be taken.
