By-Elections in Four States Today, Counting Oct 9
By-elections in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Puducherry and Assam poll on October 6, with counting scheduled for October 9, according to the Election Commission's schedule of September 8.
The mini-polls come amid a charged political atmosphere. Opposition parties are running a "save democracy" campaign over alleged voter-roll manipulation, and youth-led protests have demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The opposition plans a march to the Election Commission office on Monday.
The results on October 9 will be read as a mood check ahead of bigger battles. Bihar's assembly election campaign is heating up, and assembly polls in Assam, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu are due within months.
For the BJP and the opposition INDIA alliance, every seat counts as a signal. By-elections rarely change governments, but they shape narratives. The October 9 counting day will show which way the wind is blowing in four very different states.
