Sensex jumps 685 points, Nifty reclaims 22,700

Indian equity benchmarks extended their recovery on Tuesday, with the Sensex surging 685.34 points, or 0.95 per cent, to close at 73,067.81. The Nifty 50 gained 220.35 points, or 0.98 per cent, to settle at 22,776.10, reclaiming the 22,700 level. It was the second straight day of gains after recent volatility. Buying was broad-based: 32 of 38 sectors advanced. Media and entertainment stocks surged over 6.5 per cent, while small-cap indices outperformed large caps. Top gainers included Trent, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Hindustan Unilever and Reliance Industries. IT stocks lagged, with the Nifty IT index slipping 0.59 per cent, and Tech Mahindra, Infosys and TCS among the top drags. Analysts said strong quarterly updates from companies like Trent and Kotak provided stock-specific momentum. The rupee weakened eight paise to close at 96.43 against the US dollar. The rally comes ahead of the RBI's October policy decision, with markets watching for signals on interest rates.
