Nifty suffers worst losing run in 25 years despite 7% growth

India’s stock market is living through its worst losing streak in a quarter of a century. The Sensex and Nifty fell for eight straight weeks, their longest weekly losing run in 25 years, before edging higher this week. Investors who bought the Nifty at the start of the year are sitting on losses of roughly 15 percent. The contrast with the economy is stark: India is still growing at more than 7 percent a year, yet its market is among the weakest major performers of 2026. Foreign investors have pulled about $40 billion from Indian equities in the last two years, according to Bernstein Research data cited by the BBC. Over the past decade, net foreign investment into Indian stocks has fallen to almost zero. What has stopped a rout is domestic money. Mutual fund assets have grown from about $125 billion in 2016 to roughly $900 billion this year. The number of Indians holding stocks or funds has more than tripled to around 150 million. Households now watch their savings shrink alongside a soft job market.
