India’s EV sales hit all-time high in September: FADA

India’s electric vehicle market has set a new record. Retail sales touched an all-time monthly high in September 2026.
Total EV retail across categories reached about 3.34 lakh units, according to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations. That is up 74 per cent from 1.91 lakh units a year ago.
Electric passenger vehicle sales nearly doubled. They rose to 36,108 units from 18,559 units last September. Electric two-wheelers sold 2.07 lakh units, up 89 per cent.
Overall EV penetration rose to about 13 per cent from 10 per cent a year ago. In passenger vehicles, EV share touched 8.45 per cent.
FADA president Sai Giridhar said festive demand, lower running costs, more model choices, and policy support drove the growth. Schemes like PM E-DRIVE helped.
The wider auto market also had its best September. Total retail hit 25.37 lakh units, up 32 per cent. Five of six vehicle categories set September records.
FADA cautioned that the base was low last year. Buyers had delayed purchases before the GST 2.0 rollout. The cleaner signal, it said, is the record first-half tally of 1.55 crore units.
