FinMin tells banks: lend via UPI, go fully digital on loans

The finance ministry has asked banks to provide working capital loans through digital channels such as credit lines on UPI and the Credit Card Scheme for Micro Enterprises. Financial Services Secretary Sanjay Lohiya gave the direction at a meeting with top executives of public and private sector banks on Tuesday.Lohiya asked banks to boost their digital presence and process loans end to end digitally. He also urged private sector banks to take part more actively in financial inclusion schemes. The micro enterprises credit card scheme offers credit of up to Rs 5 lakh based on the issuer's underwriting criteria. The meeting reviewed progress under flagship inclusion schemes including Jan Dhan Yojana, Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana, Suraksha Bima Yojana, Atal Pension Yojana and Mudra Yojana. Lohiya asked state-run banks to spread awareness about claim eligibility under Jansuraksha insurance schemes so nominees receive money after a beneficiary's death. The ministry said banks should also take special care with grievances linked to insurance claims. A financial inclusion saturation campaign is planned from October 21 to December 31. The push reflects the government's continued focus on widening banking access in underserved regions.
