Crypto Tax Filers Face October 15 Filing Deadline

US holders of digital assets who filed for an extension face an October 15, 2026, deadline to submit their 2025 federal tax returns, the end of the automatic six-month extension granted by filing Form 4868 before the spring cutoff.
The extension covers filing only. Any tax owed still had to be estimated and paid by April 2026, with interest and late-payment penalties accruing on unpaid balances. Late-filing penalties start at 5 percent of unpaid tax per month, capped at 25 percent.
This is the first filing season in which brokers have reported 2025 digital-asset transactions on the new Form 1099-DA. The forms generally show gross proceeds but not the investor's cost basis, which taxpayers must calculate themselves to determine gains and losses.
The deadline arrives amid unfinished crypto regulation. In mid-September, the Senate failed to advance the CLARITY Act on a 49-50 vote, short of the 60 votes needed. The SEC and CFTC say they will keep writing rules on trading and custody rather than wait for Congress.
