Supreme Court issues notice to ECI over SIR voter-roll exercise

A Supreme Court bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant issued notices to the Election Commission and the Centre on Monday over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
The notices came on a petition challenging the revision exercise. The court declined to suspend the exercise immediately but agreed to examine the records closely.
During the hearing, the Chief Justice clarified that the court had not approved any modified Form 6. "Any modified Form 6 has not been approved by us. Let's be clear," he said, directing the poll body to produce all related documents.
The controversy follows the ECI's September 26 claim that an additional declaration attached to Form 6 had been upheld by the court. The court said it would examine who authorised the change.
The bench also reiterated that Aadhaar is not proof of citizenship. The petitioners have argued that the revision could remove genuine voters without due process, while the ECI has defended its powers under the Constitution.
