The US Supreme Court on Friday blocked Missouri from using a Trump-backed, GOP-friendly congressional map in the November midterm elections. The unsigned opinion recorded no dissents — the third time the justices have intervened in the state’s redistricting fight.

The court halted a lower federal court ruling that would have revived the 2025 map for the general election. Missouri residents will instead vote using the districts applied in 2022 and 2024. “Ordering reversion to the 2025 map in the midst of an ongoing election would usher in electoral chaos,” the justices wrote, noting absentee ballots have already been mailed and that absentee, military and overseas voting has begun.

The Missouri Supreme Court had earlier ruled the new map cannot take effect without voter approval, after opponents gathered enough signatures for a referendum on the November 3 ballot. The 2025 map, backed by President Donald Trump and Governor Mike Kehoe, was designed to give Republicans a shot at a seventh of Missouri’s eight House seats by dismantling Representative Emanuel Cleaver’s Kansas City district.

Kehoe said Missouri would follow the court’s order. The ruling lands weeks before the November 3 midterms, in which control of the narrowly divided House is at stake.
