NHRC notice to Delhi Police over journalists’ complaint

The National Human Rights Commission has issued a notice to the Delhi Police over allegations that three women journalists were manhandled during a protest at Jantar Mantar.
The incident took place on October 3 during a demonstration in the capital. The journalists alleged they were roughed up by police personnel while covering the protest. Journalists' bodies condemned the action and sought intervention.
Taking note of media reports, the NHRC has asked the Delhi Police chief to submit a detailed report within two weeks. The commission routinely steps in when press freedom and the safety of journalists are at stake.
The notice adds to the scrutiny on policing of protests in the capital, which has seen a series of demonstrations in recent weeks. Police have not yet publicly responded to the specific allegations.
The NHRC's findings, once the report is received, could lead to recommendations on how police handle media personnel at protest sites. The case will be watched by press associations across the country.
