Karnataka asks CWMA to halve Cauvery release to Tamil Nadu

Karnataka has asked the Cauvery Water Management Authority to halve its water release to Tamil Nadu. The state wants to cut the daily release from 4,000 cusecs to 2,000 cusecs at Biligundlu.
Water Resources Minister N. Cheluvarayaswamy confirmed the request on Friday. He cited severe drought in the Cauvery basin and falling reservoir levels.
The Authority had ordered the 4,000-cusec release at its meeting on September 24. The order was for 15 days.
Karnataka says the southwest monsoon has fully withdrawn from the state. Inflows into four key reservoirs have dropped sharply. The reservoirs are Krishna Raja Sagara, Hemavathi, Harangi, and Kabini.
The minister said only 49 TMC of water is available in these reservoirs. The state must preserve it for drinking water and other needs until June 2027.
The Supreme Court is also hearing the dispute. On September 24, it asked Karnataka to respond to Tamil Nadu’s plea alleging a shortfall. Tamil Nadu claims a deficit of about 20 TMC. The next hearing is on October 12.
