At least 62 people have died and 46 others were injured after three days of heavy rain triggered flooding across Uttar Pradesh, officials said on September 28, 2026.

The state government said more than 1,000 houses were damaged as flooding hit several districts. Schools were closed on Monday in parts of the state, including the capital Lucknow, while rescue teams evacuated residents from flooded areas to safer ground.

Officials advised people to avoid unnecessary travel through waterlogged areas and to stay away from fast-moving rivers, streams and drains. Rainfall is expected to ease from Monday as a weather system over the Bay of Bengal weakens, said Atul Kumar Singh, a senior scientist at the Regional Meteorological Centre in Lucknow.

Flooding also affected Odisha, where more than 75,000 people were evacuated, and neighbouring Nepal, where 21 people died in weather-related incidents between Thursday and Sunday.

The flooding followed an unusually intense burst of late-monsoon rain. A depression over the Bay of Bengal moved inland and stalled, dumping many times the normal rainfall on parts of the state. Meteorologists say such extreme downpours are becoming more common as the climate warms.
