The death toll from the recent heavy rains and floods in Uttar Pradesh has risen to 81, officials said on Monday, as the state government stepped up relief and rescue operations across affected districts.

The toll had stood at 56 on September 25 and 26, but 25 more deaths were reported on September 27, taking the total to 81. More than 62 people have been injured, over 2,200 houses damaged, 154 animals killed and crops on 81 hectares destroyed, according to the state's relief commissioner, Hrishikesh Bhaskar Yashod.

Uttar Pradesh received 66.5 mm of rainfall in the period against a normal of 7.6 mm — nearly nine times the average — with most districts recording 'large excess' rain. Rivers swollen by the downpour flooded low-lying areas, forcing evacuations.

The state government said relief camps are running in the worst-hit areas, with food, drinking water and medical aid being provided. Ex-gratia payments to the families of the deceased have been announced as per norms. Officials said teams are also assessing damage to houses, livestock and standing crops so compensation can be disbursed quickly. The weatherman has forecast reduced rainfall in the coming days, which should help the situation improve.
