Union Home Minister Amit Shah on 27 September inaugurated railway projects worth more than Rs 1,542 crore at Sabarmati in Ahmedabad. The package marks a major push for rail infrastructure in Gujarat.

Shah flagged off India’s first LNG-powered train from Sabarmati station. The train uses a diesel-plus-LNG dual-fuel system, with two driving power cars converted for LNG use.

He also inaugurated the Rs 700-crore WAG-12 locomotive maintenance shed, built to home and service up to 300 high-horsepower electric locomotives. About 154 locomotives are already stationed there.

The package includes the Kavach automatic train protection system over 404 km of the Ahmedabad division. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel attended the programme, according to reports.

The projects are part of a broader railway modernisation drive in the state. Officials said the Kavach rollout will improve safety on busy routes, and the shed will create skilled jobs. More rail projects are in the pipeline for the state.
