Sahil Wakode’s father Ravindra has begun an indefinite sit-in protest at Azad Maidan in Mumbai, demanding justice for his son. The IIT Bombay student died in his hostel room on September 18.

Ravindra Wakode told a channel on Sunday that he would continue his fast until those responsible for his son’s death are punished. “I do not care, even if I get arrested. My son should get justice constitutionally,” he said. He has alleged that Sahil faced caste-based discrimination at the institute.

Sahil, a second-year BTech student, died hours after he was found with a mobile phone during a mid-semester examination. No suicide note was recovered, reports said. The family staged a hunger strike at Azad Maidan on September 24 and met the chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes.

Mumbai Police’s Crime Branch is investigating the case. An FIR names professor Suryanarayana Doolla in connection with alleged abetment to suicide and caste-related allegations, and he has been sent on leave. IIT Bombay has formed a 10-member panel to examine the circumstances and deferred its mid-semester exams to October 10 and 11.
