MEA warns Indians against joining Russian armed forces

The Ministry of External Affairs has issued a fresh advisory for Indians travelling to Russia. It warns against joining the Russian armed forces. The advisory was issued on September 30.
The ministry said it continues to receive reports of Indian nationals being recruited into Russian forces. It has repeatedly flagged the risks over the past two years.
The MEA said many Indians are “willingly seeking out offers” to join for monetary benefits. Some believe they can later secure release through Indian authorities. “It is reiterated that this is a dangerous path and is strongly discouraged by the Government,” the advisory said.
The ministry flagged cases of Indians giving up Indian citizenship. Some obtained Russian passports and joined Russian forces without consulting Indian authorities. The government advised nationals to consider the “mortal dangers” involved.
The advisory also warned against unverified job offers abroad. It flagged recruitment by non-public entities, including voluntary groups. Indians were urged to deal only with agents registered with the MEA.
The government said it remains engaged with the Indian Embassy in Moscow and Russian authorities. It is working to secure early discharge and repatriation of Indian nationals in Russian forces.
