The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration has shut down Mumbai’s 122-year-old Kyani & Co cafe after inspectors found severe hygiene violations at the landmark Irani cafe in Dhobi Talao. The inspection took place on September 27, officials said.

Inspectors reported finding rat and cat droppings, dead cockroaches and flies on the premises. They also found blood mixed with food stored in the fridge. The cafe’s licences were suspended with immediate effect following the inspection.

The action was part of a wider enforcement drive covering 30 licences, according to officials. About 50,601.78 kg of stock, worth about Rs 1.19 crore, was seized during the checks across the outlets.

Kyani & Co is a Mumbai landmark, famous for its bun maska and Irani chai for more than a century. The closure has shocked loyal customers who grew up visiting the cafe. The management has not yet responded publicly.

Officials said the licences will stay suspended until the cafe meets hygiene standards. They added that the drive will continue at more food outlets across the city in the coming days.
