The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Monday passed a resolution moved by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah demanding the immediate and urgent restoration of full statehood to J&K. The resolution will be forwarded to the Government of India.

BJP legislators protested throughout, entering the well of the House, tearing business papers and holding mock proceedings, before staging a walkout ahead of the vote. Several members, including National Conference MLAs, had moved amendments seeking references to Article 370 and autonomy, but Abdullah urged them not to press them and eight withdrew theirs.

Abdullah said the resolution is only about restoring the promised statehood, not special status or autonomy, which he said are already on record through resolutions passed on June 26, 2000 and November 6, 2024. Congress leader Nizamuddin accused the BJP of 'jingoism' and 'subverting the Constitution', saying the party would have kept its promise if it were a 'friend of Jammu and Kashmir'.

J&K has remained a Union Territory since Parliament abrogated Article 370 in August 2019, splitting the erstwhile state into the UTs of J&K and Ladakh. The Modi-led government has promised statehood restoration, and the Assembly's resolution now puts the demand back before the Centre.
