India’s medical device sector hits $18 billion mark

India’s medical device sector has grown from a $5 billion industry in 2020-21 to about $18 billion today, a major step toward self-reliance in healthcare technology. Dr Rajiv Chhibber of industry body AiMeD shared the figures at Medical Fair India 2026, MediaBrief reported.
The milestone was a key focus of the 32nd Medical Fair India, held September 17-19 at Mumbai’s Bombay Exhibition Centre and organised by Messe Düsseldorf India, according to PharmaBiz. Chhibber said manufacturing has risen more than 100 per cent, backed by PLI and PRIP schemes, and Indian medical exports now reach around 187 countries.
The sector was long seen as import-dependent, but central and state policies are changing that, Chhibber said. The Manufacturing Frontier reported that speakers sought practical policies for investment by small and large makers. Chhibber also called for focus on patient safety, ethical marketing and pricing.
The growth matters because it means more medical equipment made in India at lower cost. It also opens jobs and export income, reducing the country’s dependence on imported devices.
