Gujarat Signs Deal for 4,000 MW Nuclear Power Plant

Gujarat State Electricity Corporation (GSECL) has signed an agreement with the Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) to develop a nuclear power project of around 4,000 MW at Dhuvaran in Anand district.
The project could involve investment of nearly ₹1 lakh crore and marks GSECL’s first entry into nuclear power. The MoU was signed in Mumbai on Thursday in the presence of Energy Minister Rushikesh Patel and NPCIL chairman V. Rajesh.
Under the deal, GSECL will assess land and supporting infrastructure while NPCIL will carry out site surveys, technical studies and expert guidance. Further work will depend on technical and economic feasibility and statutory clearances.
The proposed plant will operate under the Shanti Act, 2025, whose rules were notified on August 14. The law allows nuclear plants to be licensed to central government-authorised entities including companies and joint ventures.
Officials said nuclear power will complement Gujarat’s solar and wind capacity, which the state plans to raise beyond 100 GW by 2030, by providing steady round-the-clock electricity for grid stability.
