IMD warns of flash floods as heavy rain batters UP, Bihar

The India Meteorological Department has issued heavy rain alerts across 22 states and warned of flash floods as a deep depression interacts with a western disturbance while the southwest monsoon withdraws. The volatile combination is dumping intense rain across northern and eastern India today.
Uttar Pradesh is in the firing line. A low-pressure area over northern central UP is bringing isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall in western parts of the state and heavy rain in eastern districts. Winds gusting up to 70 km/h are adding to the risk, with waterlogging reported in several cities and rivers on the rise.
Bihar and Chhattisgarh are also facing flash flood warnings, with the IMD flagging sudden heavy spells that can overwhelm drainage in low-lying areas. The department has advised residents in vulnerable zones to avoid waterlogged roads, stay away from swollen rivers and streams, and follow local administration advisories.
The alerts come as the monsoon makes its exit, a phase notorious for abrupt, destructive downpours. Disaster management teams in the affected states have been asked to stay on standby.
