Floods and landslides killed at least 19 people across India and Nepal as heavy rain pushed rivers above danger levels, authorities said on September 27. In Uttar Pradesh, 15 people died and five were injured over 48 hours, while 117 houses were damaged, Reuters reported.

Heavy rain and storms hit 63 districts in UP, with the state recording 19 times its normal rainfall in the 24 hours to Saturday. India's Central Water Commission said 30 river-monitoring stations across seven states were in a severe situation, with the Ganga, Gandak, Kosi and other rivers above danger marks.

In Nepal, four people, three children and a woman, died after a landslide buried their house in Nishi Khola village in Baglung district. Ten Nepali workers were missing after an avalanche buried the base camp of Himlung Himal in Manang district. Nepal warned of possible flash floods in 49 of its 77 districts.

The deaths come as both countries face an extreme monsoon stretch, straining rescue and relief systems across northern India and the Himalayas.
