Delhi-NCR Wakes Up To Heavy Rain, Red Alert, Waterlogging

Delhi-NCR woke up on Monday morning to heavy rainfall and thunderstorms that brought a noticeable dip in temperatures and caused waterlogging in several areas. The India Meteorological Department issued a red alert for all 11 districts of the national capital, cautioning residents about intense showers, lightning and strong winds.

The nowcast warning, issued at 3 am, was valid until 6 am, with the red alert extended across the capital until 9 am. The weather department warned of heavy rainfall exceeding 15 mm per hour, accompanied by thunderstorms and wind gusts of 62 to 87 kmph, cautioning that intense rain and strong winds could affect road traffic, reduce visibility and cause water to accumulate in low-lying areas.

Where waterlogging was reported

Heavy rainfall led to waterlogging near the Jhandewalan Temple in the Karol Bagh area of central Delhi, shortly after the rain began. Visuals of water accumulation also emerged from around the Mahipalpur flyover, Nehru Place and Jantar Mantar. The showers coincided with the morning rush, raising the possibility of delays on busy roads and at major intersections.

Noida, Gurugram and Ghaziabad also experienced rain and thunderstorms, and commuters were advised to check road conditions before travelling, particularly in areas prone to water accumulation. Motorists were advised to exercise caution and avoid waterlogged stretches wherever possible. An orange alert was issued for parts of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.

Relief from the heat

The sudden downpour brought a brief respite from the heat, with the showers starting the day on a cooler note. Data from the IMD showed that maximum temperatures across the capital had already dipped by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius in the 24 hours leading up to the storm.

What the week ahead looks like

While the morning showers provided a cooler start to the day, the IMD indicated that this wet spell is expected to be short-lived, with conditions shifting toward partly cloudy skies and dry weather over the coming days. Maximum temperatures are projected to fluctuate between 31 and 35 degrees Celsius, while minimum temperatures will likely stay within the 22 to 25 degrees range as the week progresses.
