4.9 earthquake in Uttarakhand shakes Delhi-NCR homes

Tremors shook Delhi-NCR late on Tuesday night after a 4.9-magnitude earthquake struck Uttarakhand's Chamoli district.

The National Centre for Seismology said the quake hit at around 10:15 to 10:24 pm. Its epicentre was in Chamoli, about 13 km below the surface.

People in Delhi said furniture moved. Many who live in high-rise buildings stepped out of their homes for a while.

Tremors were also felt in Himachal Pradesh and Punjab, reports said.

No damage or injuries were reported, officials said.

Delhi lies in seismic zone IV, a high-damage risk area. Tall buildings in the capital often sway even during distant quakes.

Officials said there was no cause for panic.

Residents were advised to stay calm during any shaking and move away from heavy objects.

The Himalayan belt is among the most earthquake-prone regions in the world. The Indian plate is slowly pushing into the Eurasian plate, building stress along the fault lines.

Experts say even moderate quakes in the hills can send tremors far into the plains. This is why distant events are often felt in the capital.

The National Centre for Seismology tracks such events through its network of observatories. Its data helps emergency agencies assess the impact.
