Delhi has launched the DURGA scheme, a pink e-auto programme aimed at safer transport for women. The initiative will put women-driven electric auto-rickshaws on city roads in the coming months.

Under the scheme, women drivers will get financial support to buy electric three-wheelers. The autos will be painted pink for easy identification and fitted with GPS and panic buttons. Officials said the focus is on last-mile connectivity near metro stations and markets.

The government said the scheme will create jobs for hundreds of women while making travel safer. Training in driving and vehicle maintenance will be provided. Subsidies will bring down the cost of the e-autos for first-time buyers.

Transport experts welcomed the move but said charging infrastructure must keep pace. The first batch of pink e-autos is expected to hit the roads by early next year. Women’s groups said the scheme could change how safe women feel while travelling at night. The government plans to expand it to more routes if the pilot succeeds.
