Twenty-six people have died in the latest round of flooding in Assam, where the Brahmaputra has breached its banks and inundated large parts of the state.

More than 85,000 people are currently staying in 214 relief camps, officials said, with 18 districts affected. In Dhemaji district alone, around 46,000 people have been hit by the floods, which have damaged homes, crops and roads.

The flooding has come even as the southwest monsoon withdraws from the region, with late-season rain swelling rivers across the Northeast. Relief teams are distributing food, water and medicines at the camps, while medical teams are on standby to prevent water-borne diseases.

Assam faces near-annual floods, and this year's toll adds to the state's long struggle with the Brahmaputra's shifting course. The state government has said it is assessing the damage and will release compensation to affected families. Officials added that the situation is expected to improve over the next few days as rainfall eases, though low-lying areas may remain waterlogged for some time.
