Nine people lost their lives after a sleeper bus caught fire on the Yamuna Expressway near Greater Noida, in one of the deadliest road accidents on the high-speed corridor in recent times. The bus was in motion when the blaze broke out, trapping passengers, many of whom were asleep.

What Happened

According to initial reports, the fire erupted suddenly as the bus travelled along the expressway, and flames spread rapidly through the vehicle. Passengers in the sleeper berths had little time to react. Survivors managed to escape through windows and emergency exits as the bus was brought to a halt, but nine people could not get out in time.

Fire tenders and police teams rushed to the spot, dousing the flames and launching rescue operations. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals, while the charred bus was cleared from the carriageway to restore traffic movement on the busy route.

Response and Probe

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took note of the tragedy, and the administration moved to coordinate relief for the victims’ families. A probe has been ordered to determine the cause of the fire, with investigators examining whether a mechanical fault, an electrical short circuit or lapses in the bus’s fitness certification played a role.

The accident has renewed concerns about the safety of long-distance sleeper buses, which have been involved in several fire tragedies across the country. Road safety experts say strict enforcement of fitness norms, functional emergency exits and fire safety equipment on board are essential to prevent such disasters from recurring.

Expressway authorities have said they will cooperate fully with the investigation, while transport experts have called for mandatory fire safety audits of commercial passenger vehicles. For the families of the nine victims, however, such measures come too late. Their loss is a grim reminder that on India’s fastest roads, safety enforcement must keep pace with speed.
