Nipah scare eases as two West Bengal nurses test negative

The Nipah virus scare in West Bengal has eased after two infected nurses tested negative for the contagion. Both nurses are under surveillance and their condition has improved, health officials said. The male nurse has been discharged from hospital. The female nurse has also tested negative but remains under treatment. She has been taken off ventilator support and is under observation. Her condition has improved significantly, though she is not yet out of danger, an official told PTI. Nearly 200 people who came in contact with the confirmed cases are under observation. After the cases were confirmed, several Southeast Asian countries announced screening measures such as thermal scanners and health declarations. The WHO has said travel curbs are not needed. Nipah is a dangerous virus spread mainly by fruit bats, with a high fatality rate in past outbreaks. Kerala has dealt with Nipah cases before and shared its experience with other states.
