Kenya Confirms First Ebola Case and Death, Traces Contacts

Kenya has confirmed its first Ebola case and death after a man who travelled from the Democratic Republic of Congo died in Nairobi.
The patient, a Kenyan who had lived in the DRC for seven years, fell ill about a month ago. He travelled by road to Kampala in Uganda, then boarded Jambojet flight 8523 to Nairobi on October 3.
He passed routine airport screening at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport but was taken to Nairobi Hospital as his condition worsened. Doctors isolated him after symptoms including fever, chills and bleeding under the skin. Two laboratories confirmed the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola. He died on Monday night.
Health authorities have identified 28 contacts, including relatives and health workers. They are also tracing 23 passengers and four crew members from the flight.
Officials urged the public not to panic, saying containment measures are active. Kenya had never previously recorded an Ebola case.
