India records 5,726 rabies deaths a year: ICMR survey

India records an estimated 5,726 rabies deaths every year, according to a new survey by the Indian Council of Medical Research’s National Institute of Epidemiology.
The study also estimated 9.1 million dog bites annually across the country. Researchers said the figures highlight the huge and undercounted burden of rabies in India.
Rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms appear, but deaths are preventable with timely vaccination after a bite. Experts say many victims never get the shots in time.
The findings add urgency to India’s goal of eliminating dog-mediated rabies deaths. Health officials say wider vaccination of both people and stray dogs is needed.
Most deaths occur in rural areas where clinics lack vaccines. The study’s authors called for better reporting, noting that official figures have long understated the toll.
Children are the most frequent victims of dog bites. Free vaccines at government hospitals can save lives if given quickly.
