The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has reached 8,067 confirmed cases, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control. Its report of 27 September 2026, using data through 26 September, recorded 3,901 deaths and 2,070 recoveries, with 773 patients isolated in hospital.

The outbreak has affected 63 of the country’s 167 health zones across seven provinces, and 74.7 per cent of identified contacts are under follow-up. Health workers have warned that the response is running short of staff as cases surge, with North Kivu province seeing a sharp rise in infections.

The World Health Organization has described the situation as out of control in some areas, urging stronger international support. Ebola spreads through contact with the bodily fluids of infected people and has a high fatality rate, making rapid isolation and contact tracing critical. The DRC has faced repeated Ebola outbreaks, but the scale of the current one is testing the country’s fragile health system. Aid agencies are calling for more funding and personnel.
