Cyclospora lettuce outbreak ends with 12,883 ill
The largest cyclospora outbreak in US history is over. The CDC declared the multistate outbreak closed on September 11, with a final count of 12,883 confirmed illnesses across 21 states.
Federal data showed 570 hospitalizations and two deaths in Michigan. The outbreak was linked to iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico. Investigators first traced it to shredded lettuce served at Taco Bell restaurants.
The FDA said the outbreak began June 22. Taylor Farms recalled iceberg lettuce grown in central Mexico on July 17. In August, the FDA widened its probe to 15 states as cases passed 6,000.
Cyclospora is a tiny parasite that causes intestinal illness, spread through contaminated food or water. The CDC says washing does not reliably remove it and chlorine does not kill it.
Federal officials say all recalled lettuce is now off the market. The outbreak was nearly three times worse than the previous record year of 2019, which saw about 4,700 illnesses.
